Helping Chamberlain students with a 24/7 teaching assistant in Canvas LMS

Background

Chamberlain University, part of Adtalem Global Education, recently embarked on an innovative journey to enhance student support through artificial intelligence. In collaboration with LearnWise AI, Chamberlain piloted an AI assistant, aptly renamed "NurseAlly," to provide personalized, on-demand support for their 25,000 nursing students. This case study is special, as it's a testament to our new integration: quiz mode, which supports students by generating practice test questions from existing course material, helping them study for exams.

The Challenge

The university's medical education program focuses on offering primarily online courses, facing the challenge of keeping students working remotely engaged. Implementing LearnWise was one way to maintain student engagement by helping them navigate courseload and materials while supporting them in their studies with the quiz mode feature. In this case, interactions between students and LearnWise are very different from other partners, as students at Chamberlain University have longer conversations with our AI assistant to delve into course material (an average of 420 interactions per student!), while a usual interaction in other cases only involves 1-2 questions on average,

The Solution

  • NurseAlly was introduced to up to 5,000 students across several courses.
  • The AI assistant was deeply integrated with Canvas LMS, accessing course content including pages, files, and even third-party EdTech tool materials.
  • Implementation utilized LTI placement within Canvas courses, allowing students to easily interact with NurseAlly in the context of their coursework.

The Results in Numbers

  1. NurseAlly demonstrated versatility in addressing student needs:
  • Successfully handled basic queries like "When is my next assignment due?"
  • Tackled complex requests such as "Make a study plan for me."
  • Served as a virtual tutor, generating practice questions and multiple-choice assessments.
  1. Deep Engagement
  • Overall, NurseAlly has had over 4,900 conversations, of which only 24 were escalated to human support staff.
  • AI resolution rate is 99.5%, with an answer rating of 96% (showing overwhelmingly positive reviews from students).
  • To date, NurseAlly has provided over 46,000 AI answers.
  1. Insight Generation
  • Analysis of conversation trends revealed valuable insights:
  • Students frequently sought support for other EdTech LTI apps.
  • This finding is informing plans to expand NurseAlly's knowledge base to cover a broader range of tools.
  1. User Experience Improvements
  • Initial uncertainty about NurseAlly's capabilities led to the introduction of shortcut buttons for lesson planning and self-study question generation, helping us pilot quiz mode - and succeeding!
  • This enhancement significantly increased usage and adoption rates.

Looking Ahead

Chamberlain University is excited to build upon these promising results. The pilot strongly supports LearnWise AI's vision for comprehensive student support both inside and outside the classroom. Plans are underway to expand NurseAlly's capabilities and integration across more courses.

This pilot demonstrates the potential of AI-powered assistants in higher education, particularly in specialized fields like nursing. By providing personalized, always-available support, tools like NurseAlly can significantly enhance the learning experience and potentially improve student outcomes - especially when studying for key exams in their university careers.

Would you consider trying an AI assistant for your courses? The results from Chamberlain University suggest it could be a game-changer in student support and engagement. Let's discuss how this technology could benefit your institution!
