How the Moodle AI integration works

Install the LearnWise plugin directly from the Moodle plugins directory, or from GitHub repository. You need Moodle 3.9 or higher and site administrator access.

Then choose how deep the integration goes. The three layers are independent, so you can start shallow and extend later.

Content ingestion: Enable the web service for course content ingestion, then select which content types the assistant reads. Knowledge sources refresh automatically each week, so no manual upkeep is needed. You can add institutional policies, guides, and FAQs alongside course content.

Live API integration: Connect with a client ID and secret so the assistant recognizes user roles and reads assignments and live course data, then tailors answers by role. This is what makes answers role-aware: a student, an instructor, and an administrator asking the same question get different responses. It is also the layer that enables grading assistance and the AI Ops Assistant.

Placement: Publish a floating button across Moodle, or embed a Moodle AI assistant at course level through LTI. Administrators publish in a few clicks and can roll out department by department rather than institution-wide on day one.

Governance and control

Moodle institutions choose Moodle partly for control, and the LearnWise AI integration is designed not to undo that.

• You host the plugin: It runs on your Moodle site. You choose the version, the upgrade timing, and which content the web service exposes.
• Data stays in your region: Hosting location is yours to specify. Your institution owns the data, and it is never used to train AI models.
• Scoped by Moodle role: A student, a teacher, and a manager asking the same question get different answers, because the plugin reads Moodle's own role assignments rather than a separate permission list.
• Reversible: Disable the web service or uninstall the plugin and the integration stops. There is no separate copy of your course content to unwind.
